Thatchers Britain, pretty grim for many…. high unemployment, revolt, privatisation and war. Many great cities were left to rot as the Iron Lady upon moving Downing Street, introduced a series of political and economic initiatives intended to reverse widespread unemployment and Britain’s struggles in the wake of the Winter of discontent and an ongoing recession. Her political philosophy and economic policies emphasised deregulation (particularly of the financial sector), the privatisation of state owned companies and reducing the power and influence of trade unions. Thatcher’s popularity during her first years in office waned amid recession and widespread unemployment. Only victory in the 1982 Falklands war and the recovering economy brought a resurgence of support, resulting in her decisive re election in 1983. During this time faceless masses of teens were leaving school with no prospects, hope or a prosperous future. She went on to hold office until 1990 taking us through more riots and unrest with the infamous miners strike later followed by the poll tax riots and another war in the form of The Gulf crisis.
However undeterred by this, many a youth of that era would not accept being poor and to be made feel worthless, on the contrary they found ways to brush aside such matters and strut around in some of the finest clothing garments Europe had to offer in the urban decay which surrounded them. They would not settle for the dole queue and hand me downs, devising ingenious ways to fill up the coffers to be seen in clothes only designed with St Andrews, Roland Garros or the French Riviera in mind. On paper such an awful era, yet due to the spirit of Maggie’s children some of the best memories, this forthcoming t shirt design is dedicated to them.
