He began his professional career at Scunthorpe United in 1968, where he quickly made a name for himself. In 1971, he was signed by Liverpool, where he achieved significant success, winning three First Division titles, two UEFA Cups, an FA Cup, and the European Cup.
In 1977, he moved to Hamburger SV in Germany, where he became the highest-paid player in the country and won the Bundesliga title. He was named European Footballer of the Year twice, in 1978 and 1979.
After his time in Germany, he returned to England to play for Southampton and later joined Newcastle United, where he helped the team gain promotion to the top flight before retiring in 1984. Throughout his playing career, Keegan scored 204 goals in 592 club appearances and earned 63 caps for the England national team, scoring 21 goals and captaining the side 31 times.
