In 89/90 the forgotten mill town of Blackburn, became the centre of the Northern illegal rave scene. It’s large number of abandoned warehouses and factories made it perfect for this. Driven by the legendary Hardcore Uproar organisation (brain child of Tommy Smith, Tony Kreft and co), these parties saw rivalries between major cities such as Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds put to one side as they all gurned under the same roof until the sun came up. If you were there, you may remember the graffiti sprayed on the Whitebirk roundabout as you came off the motorway…. it simply read ‘Boomtown’.
